CNN —Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua was crowned the 2023 Miss Universe at the culmination of the annual beauty pageant, which took place on Saturday night in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador. The winners of 84 countries’ national pageants had competed at this year’s Miss Universe, judged by a panel including model Halima Aden, “Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg and two former Miss Universe winners, Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad & Tobago (Miss Universe 1977) and Iris Mittenaere of France (Miss Universe 2016). Owen Davidson, an Australian tennis player who formed a dominant mixed doubles team with Billie Jean King in the 1960s and ’70s, winning eight Grand Slam titles with her, along with five doubles titles with other partners, died on Friday in Conroe, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Davidson came of age during a heyday for Australian tennis, with peers like Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Roy Emerson, John Newcombe and Margaret Court. Unlike those players, Davidson did not have significant success in singles tennis, never advancing beyond the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. From 1965 to 1974, he won 11 major mixed doubles titles and two men’s doubles titles. In 1967, he swept every major mixed doubles event, winning the Australian Open with his countrywoman Lesley Turner Bowrey and then winning the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open with King.

CNN —Hugh Jackman says he auditioned for the role of Sandra Bullock’s love interest, FBI agent Eric Matthews, in “Miss Congeniality,” but lost out on the part. “No one knew ‘X-Men’ yet,” Jackman told the publication. Jackman said it was the first time he’d ever tested with another actor, and that he wasn’t expecting to see Bullock at the audition. I’m guessing eight people she tested with.”The role ended up going to Benjamin Bratt. Jackman said the timing was not in his favor; he’d auditioned for “Miss Congeniality” after he wrapped filming as Wolverine in “X-Men” but the movie hadn’t been released yet.
